Martin Moland successfully defended his thesis on popular support for a differentiated European Union on 11 September 2023.

How is support for European integration differentiated? This is the question Martin Moland set out to answer in his PhD-thesis ‘Differentiated Views on a Differentiated Union? Investigating popular support for a differentiated European Union’.  

A complex picture of popular support for the EU 

In his thesis, Moland shows that the attitudes of European citizens towards the EU may be more complex than many political scientists have previously thought. For example, Moland finds that citizens are prone to wish for more integrated EU policies within migration or defence policies, despite these being policy areas many have considered to belong to EU member states.

Public defence at the University of Oslo

Moland’s public defence took place on 11 September 2023 at the University of Oslo. His adjudication committee was Professor Theresa Kuhn, University of Amsterdam, Professor Dirk Leuffen, University of Konstanz and Associate Professor Øyvind Stiansen, University of Oslo.  

His supervisors have been Professor Christopher Lord, John Erik Fossum, both ARENA Centre for European Studies at the University of Oslo, and Postdoctoral Fellow Peter Egge Langsæther, Department of Political Science, University of Oslo.
