The Scholarship was established in 2004 and is funded by Waipapa Taumata Rau University of Auckland. These regulations also apply to faculty and large- scale research institute, and externally funded Summer Research Scholarships that are administered by the central Waipapa Taumata Rau University of Auckland Summer Research Scholarship Scheme.

The main purpose of the Scholarship is to give current international and domestic university students an opportunity to experience research, and to thereby encourage them to pursue postgraduate study at Waipapa Taumata Rau University of Auckland.
