The Award was established in 1979 as a result of a public subscription in memory of the late Professor Thomas Norman Rive, who was a member of the Music School from 1945 to 1978. He was appointed to a Personal Chair in Music in 1974, and on several occasions was Acting Head of School, a position he held at the time of his death in February 1978.
