The Prize was established in 1999 and is financed from a gift made by a former student and staff member of the University of Auckland.
The main purpose of the Prize is to reward excellence in the study of child language and literacy and to encourage interest in research with a focus on linguistics and on the language and literacy needs of children in New Zealand and the near Pacific.
