The Prize was established by the New Zealand Society of Pathologists and the Royal College of Pathologists of Australia, which provided a trust fund in 1975 as a mark of gratitude for the facilities given by the School of Medicine where the Combined Conference of Pathologists was held in August 1974. In 1994 at the request of the New Zealand Society of Pathologists, the name of the Prize was amended to the Flora Smith Prize in Pathology in recognition of the former Director of Pathology at Auckland Hospital.
