This composite score reflects your academic performance over the years, both in school and in your home country. Therefore, in order to be successful in this section, you should have a well-written and logical essay that clearly demonstrates:

• The challenges you faced in your studies, such as illness or family circumstances, and how you overcame them

• The new approaches you took to studying that may have resulted in lower scores

How you changed your mindset and became more determined to pursue your studies in the later years in order to find a higher purpose and make a positive impact on society.

 

Your GPA is often seen as an indicator of your talent and potential. However, this does not necessarily mean that if you have faced challenges or hardships, you will automatically be given a scholarship out of pity. Instead, the focus will be on how you have overcome those difficulties and still managed to maintain a good GPA, showing that you have the determination and resilience to succeed. If your scores on exams like the SAT, GMAT, or GRE are higher than your GPA, it may be effective to include an essay about trying a new approach to studying, as this can demonstrate that your GPA does not fully reflect your abilities and that you are capable of adapting to different methods of learning. On the other hand, if both your exam scores and GPA are low and you simply attribute this to not fitting into the traditional learning style in Vietnam, the examiner may view you as weak and unprepared. It is important to show that you have the drive and determination to overcome challenges and succeed, no matter the circumstances.

While your GPA, IELTS, and exam scores like the SAT, GMAT, or GRE are important factors in the admissions process, they are only part of the equation. Ultimately, what matters most is whether your essay can convince the admissions committee that you are a strong candidate, even if your scores do not stand out. Your energy, mindset, and overall potential cannot be fully measured by these numbers alone.

Only those who demonstrate exceptional ability or drive will meet the minimum requirements for admission to the school. Many of the top 10 applicants will excel in these areas. However, even if someone has faced significant challenges in obtaining an education and still manages to perform well, their application will still be valued and given due consideration. This is because the admissions committee recognizes the effort and determination required to overcome obstacles and succeed academically.
